The Developmental Transitions model of dynamics of cognitive vulnerability and family support is a “proof of concept” model where the primary purpose is to demonstrate the feasibility of using system dynamics to develop feedback theories in developmental psychology. Details of the model and documentation are described in Hovmand et al (2022) and the CCFP22 release on GitHub.
Figure 1 is the model with loop labels assigned based on the loop dominance analysis (Schoenberg, Davidsen, and Eberlein, 2020) implemented in Stella Simulator. B and R prefixes refer to loops that were always behaving as balancing and reinforcing loops. Loops labeled with U prefix behaved at least once as a balancing loop and also a reinforcing loop across the initial conditions and parameter spaces simulated. When there is a prevailing behavior across the simulations, the prevailing behavior is labeled in parentheses (e.g., “U1 (B3)”).

Figure 2 shows the results for a transition from case 1 to case 3. The dominant loops correspond to the diagram in Figure 1. To interact and explore the diagram, click here to interact with the plot.

Figure 3 summarizes the results from simulating and analyzing transition across six cases where “1-2” refers to a transition from case 1 to case 2. To explore this graph in more detail, click here to interact with the plot (may take a few seconds to load).

Figure 3 provides a global view to identify and characterize potential patterns of loop dominance for additional analysis. For example, 1-4, 1-5, and 1-6 appear to have a pattern of brifrucations in loop dominance. To further explore this, we can look at Figure 4.
Figure 4 shows the patterns of loop dominance across transitions between 4 cases (1-6, 1-5, and 1-4) organized by the “age” of tipping points in loop dominance.
